The Centre for Social Anthropology and Computing (CSAC) aims to advance 'ordinary' anthropology through the exploration, development and application of computational approaches to research problems across the range of anthropology including the humanities, social sciences and sciences. CSAC is presently part of HRAF Advanced Research Centres (hrafARC), affiliated with the Human Relations Area Files, Yale University.

CSAC Plans and Activities

• CSAC founded a Prize for Digital Storytelling for the Student Video Competition. The 2015 prise was awarded to Rachel Downes for
  distinction in technical and cinematographic creativity and digital storytelling. Her film is Cirque de Curiosité.
• Michael Fischer has been appointed Executive Editor for the journal World Cultures.
• Hosting SASci Europe in 2015.
• Further development of the iWild application to detect illegal wildlife sales
• Further development of the Cook Islands BIodiversity and Ethnobiological Database.
• Development of the CSAC Ethnographics services platform
• Collaborating with staff at eHRAF to develop a services platform for ethnography.
• Partner in the UC Irvine and Douglas White Complex Social Science Supercomputer Gateway Project.
• Collaborating with Dr. Sukaina Bharwani and the Stockholm Environment Institute on Congo Livelihoods Research.
• Further development of the Kinship Algebra Modeller with Dwight Read, and incorporation into Kinsources.net
• Co-founder and partner in the Kinsources initiative (U Paris).
• Collaborating with Carol Ember of HRAF on archiving and ethnographic and other anthropological data reuse.
• Collaborating with John Demoss on the ontological foundations of agency.
• Updating VideoGrok, a media authoring/analysis platform for ethnographic media analysis and presentations.
• Development of tools for supporting anthropological research through data mining.
• Work with Sally Applin (Kent) and Kevin Walker (RCA) on visualising online social networks.
• Bicker and Fischer 2014. Established HRAF Advanced Research Centres [EU]. HRAF ARC will develop synergies between comparative  blue skies and applied research.
• Ember and Fischer 2014. Established HRAF Advanced Research Centers, Yale. HRAF ARC will develop synergies between comparative blue skies and applied research. HRAF ARC at Yale has received its first grant funded by NSF for 950k US$ to investigate disaster recovery across a wide range of cultures.
• Bicker and Fischer 2014. Established competition for best SAC student proposal for a development oriented business. Winner will receive £1000 pounds plus mentoring, legal, accounting and financial services for one year.Please find attached the iPad paper. Also, you should mention:
